<br />
I met Leonardo in Silicon Valley less than a month ago. He was impressed with, and a fan of, pretotyping ... and I quickly became a fan of Leonardo. My first instincts were confirmed when Leonardo first suggested, then completed, a great translation of my book in Italian in record time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jpDVzkni4E0/UGIiXlLjevI/AAAAAAAAC2o/er4rBzkYlNA/s1600/PretotipareItalianTranslationCover.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jpDVzkni4E0/UGIiXlLjevI/AAAAAAAAC2o/er4rBzkYlNA/s1600/PretotipareItalianTranslationCover.bmp" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
After many years in the US, my Italian may be a bit rusty, but I loved the way Leonardo translated my writing and idioms into their Italian counterpart. A very good and very creative effort – in record time.<br />
<br />
This adds to the Spanish translation <span style="font-family: inherit;">by Julian Dominguez Laperal </span>(<a href="http://innovacion-sistematica.net/index.php/publicaciones/libros/24-pretotipar-esto" target="_blank">here</a>) and there's rumor of a French translation already in progress. There are also more <i>exotic</i> translations in the work, so stay tuned.<br />
<br />
Here's a <a href="http://learningstartup.org/wp-content/plugins/download-monitor/download.php?id=5" target="_blank">link to the free PDF</a> of <i>Pretotipare – Assicurati di costruire la cosa giusta prima di costruirla bene.</i><br />
<br />
Thank you Leonardo!<br />

We have a full house of participants from many great companies, and a ton of new material and exercises.<br />
<br />
Hopefully this workshop is the first of many!<br />

On top of that, about half the emails I get are from countries other than the US.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is very gratifying and a strong signal that pretotyping itself is "the right it" or "el esto correcto" – as you'd say in Spanish.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">You can <a href="http://innovacion-sistematica.net/doc/Pretotipar_esto.pdf" target="_blank">download a PDF of Julian's translation from here</a>.</span><br />

<br />
The organizers of the event were kind enough to film my presentation, and I've edited it to combine the video with the slides.<br />
<br />
The live presentation complements the <a href="https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=explorer&chrome=true&srcid=0B0QztbuDlKs_ZTk2M2RhZWItYzk3YS00ZDZmLTgyZjItY2Y2ZWIyYjZkOTE3&hl=en_US" target="_blank"><i>Pretotype It</i></a> book and expands on some of the ideas. So, it's probably worth your time even you've already read the book.<br />

<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
Productyping is the evil twin of pretotyping. If pretotyping can be summarized as: “make sure you are building <i>the right </i><i>it</i> before you build <i>it</i> right,” productyping can be summarized as: “build <i>it</i> right even if you are not sure you are building <i>the right it</i>.”</blockquote>
Here are some signs that you might be productyping instead of pretotyping:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>You add non-critical features and embellishments that no user has requested.</li>
<li>You worry about scalability when you don't even have 100 (or 10) users.</li>
<li>You spend too much time to tweaking the UI: <i>This line should be 3 pixels instead of 2.</i></li>
<li><i>...</i></li>
</ul>
<div>
And here's the grandaddy of them all:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>You prematurely design and develop a general solution instead of addressing specific needs, problems and requests of your <i>existing</i> users in a timely manner.</li>
</ul>
<div>
This XKCD comic really hits the spot on this last point:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
</div>

<br />
I designed this workshop for teams working together on specific projects. I am experimenting with the ideal number of "students", but since the workshop is meant to be hands-on and interactive I expect that we'll get the best results with 10-20 people per workshop.<br />
<br />
After an introduction to the <a href="http://www.pretotyping.org/the-pretotyping-manifesto-1" target="_blank">Pretotyping Manifesto</a>, we looked at several examples of pretotyping in different industries, and then we set of to design and develop pretotypes specifically for the team's needs (I call this pretostorming.)<br />
<br />
All attendees received a hard-copy of <a href="https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=explorer&chrome=true&srcid=0B0QztbuDlKs_ZTk2M2RhZWItYzk3YS00ZDZmLTgyZjItY2Y2ZWIyYjZkOTE3&hl=en_US" target="_blank"><i>Pretotype It</i></a> (of course) but also a copy of Eric Ries' excellent <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Lean-Startup-Entrepreneurs-Continuous-Innovation/dp/0307887898" target="_blank">The <i>Lean Startup</i></a>.<br />
<br />
Here's a photo from the workshop with the attendees showing off their <i>schwag</i>:<br />

A couple of people had working pretotypes within 24 hours and the feedback from attendees has been very positive. Here's one quote from the team lead:<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><i> "</i></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #222222;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><i>You are going to love this workshop! Completely energized the team -- ideas became reality only hours/days after the conclusion."</i></span></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Based on the success of the pilot workshop, I've already been invited to conduct 5 more in the next 2-3 weeks and plan a lot more over the next few months.</div>

<br />
As you might expect, it's a pretotype book (a <i>pretobook?</i> a <i>Minimum Viable Book</i>?) with some rough edges. But it has enough meat to be worth your while, and the initial reviews from my colleagues at Google have been positive.<br />
<br />
Here's the cover:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HEft-K3Kbfg/TkqyAZQ3nuI/AAAAAAAACSo/woOJ53pGMho/s1600/PretotypeItBookCover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HEft-K3Kbfg/TkqyAZQ3nuI/AAAAAAAACSo/woOJ53pGMho/s320/PretotypeItBookCover.jpg" width="229" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can download the full PDF from <a href="https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=explorer&chrome=true&srcid=0B0QztbuDlKs_ZTk2M2RhZWItYzk3YS00ZDZmLTgyZjItY2Y2ZWIyYjZkOTE3&hl=en_US">Google Docs</a> (note: this link has been updated to the Second Pretotype Edition and I've removed the Scribd link since they've started charging for downloading the PDF.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Let me know if you have problems downloading it, I might hit some quota maximum (says he optimistically.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You should be able to read the entire book in well less than an hour. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Let me know what you think of it, and feel free to send me your pretotype stories, I plan to add several "case studies" and examples from other people in the new edition.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thanks, </div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Law of Failure states:</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">
<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">X% of all new Y will fail</span></span></b></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Where X% is a disheartening large percentage (say, 80-90% or more) and Y is some new thing (an app, a company, a restaurant, a novel, a non-profit organization, a genetically modified artichoke, etc.)</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">You've probably heard variations on the Law of Failure many times:</span></div>

Heck, it doesn't even try. Quite the contrary, pretotyping seeks failure and uses the Law of Failure to its advantage – the same way good accountants use tax laws and Lady Gaga uses paparazzi.</span></span></span></div>
<div style="font: normal normal normal 15px/normal 'Courier New'; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">Once you start practicing pretotyping – and if you practice it well – <b>you will fail many more times than before </b>... but with a VERY BIG difference.</span></span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">The following image compares what happens with and without pretotyping, assuming the same investment of time, money and effort. I call it <i>The Pretotyping Effect</i>:</span></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As the image shows, if you are afraid of failure, pretotyping is not for you. Pretotyping is not a way to avoid failure; it actually accelerates the rate of failure and dramatically increases the number of failures. But they are all <i>fast</i> failures, which leave you plenty of time to keep trying new ideas so you can increase your odds of finding <b><i>the right 'it.'</i></b></span></div>

Seventy people out of one-hundred telling you that your idea for, say, a mobile app is great and that they would buy it, is nowhere near as valuable as three people out of one-hundred actually buying it (or at least downloading it.) Positive opinions are easy to get. Actual money or downloads are much harder to get. How many innovators have burned through their life savings (or VC funding) and wasted years of their life pursuing some vision and ideas because of a false belief fed by the positive opinions from well-meaning family, friends – and potential customers? </span><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><i>[Note: In my experience, most potential customers remain potential customers. In the absence of an actual product–due to the fact the product does not exist yet–the next best approach is to simulate the experience with a facsimile.</i></blockquote></blockquote><blockquote><blockquote><i>A Corollary:</i></blockquote></blockquote><blockquote><blockquote><i>A facsimile that can be modified quickly and cheaply will produce more appealing products because a greater number of variants can be produced than a facsimile that is slow and expensive to produce.</i></blockquote></blockquote>Now we are talking. Ryan has a way with words. I will take this feedback and wording and will probably integrate it in future versions of pretotyping material. Which brings me to one of the key points of pretotyping: using feedback. If you ignore feedback, or only listen to positive feedback you might as well go ahead and <i><b>produc</b><b>t</b>ype</i> (i.e. skip ahead, build the product you are thinking of, and cross your fingers that people will actually go for it.)<br />
<br />
One of the best indication that you are <i>on to something</i> with your idea or product is that people are willing to invest their valuable time to give you feedback. Ryan obviously took some time to write his blog post and craft his Pretotyping Assertion and Corollary. He would not have invested that time if he thought that pretotyping had no merit. The not-so-implicit message I read in Ryan's post is: "There's something interesting here but, IMO, it's presented poorly. Here's a way to improve it."<br />
<br />
Thank you Ryan!<br />

<br />
Well, we've reached another milestone in pretotyping – it's no longer considered a typo by Google search. Yeay!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aA8wOaraqUY/Taxw9uUcAkI/AAAAAAAACL4/x-7Cb3eESXk/s1600/PretotypingSearch.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="176" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aA8wOaraqUY/Taxw9uUcAkI/AAAAAAAACL4/x-7Cb3eESXk/s320/PretotypingSearch.png" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Alas, <i>pretotype</i> still returns a "Did you mean ..."<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wJe440ahkFs/TaxxSl7iHQI/AAAAAAAACL8/fH2L868p6yI/s1600/PretotypeSearch.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="50" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wJe440ahkFs/TaxxSl7iHQI/AAAAAAAACL8/fH2L868p6yI/s320/PretotypeSearch.png" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">But it's only a matter of time ...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Alberto</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4999333712157021553.post-66069865600031995272011-04-12T14:59:00.000-07:002011-04-12T15:00:08.045-07:00More presentations on pretotyping-based innovation by Patrick, Alberto and JeremyPeople love the pretotyping message. So far, every time we've given a talk on pretotyping-based innovation, we've been invited to give at least another talk. We've been busy. Fortunately there are three of us (Alberto, Patrick and Jeremy) to share the load.<br />
<br />
Here are two upcoming presentation:<br />
<b><br />
</b><br />
<b>Copeland Does Copenhagen</b><br />
<br />
Patrick Copeland's <a href="http://www.infoq.com/presentations/QCon-Keynote-Innovation-at-Google">keynote at the latest QCon</a> was a big hit, and he'll be repeating it this May at the <a href="http://gotocon.com/cph-2011/speaker/Patrick+Copeland">GOTO conference</a> in Copelandhagen - ahem - Copenhagen. Below is a photo of Patrick trying to sell his $1B idea.<br />
<br />

<b>Savoia and Clark Do Silicon Valley</b><br />
<br />
In the meantime, I (Alberto Savoia) and Jeremy Clark have agreed to be the keynote speakers at the next Global Innovation and Leadership conference (<a href="http://gil-global.com/siliconvalley/index.html">GIL 2011</a>) - the title of our presentation is going to be:<i> "The Pretotyping Manifesto – Rules for lean innovation."</i><br />
<i><br />
</i><br />

These events are typically between several days and a week in length. A hackathon refers not simply to one time hacks, but to a specific time when many people come together to hack on what they want to, how they want to - with little to no restrictions on direction or goal of the programming."</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 19px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 19px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A micro-hackathon is for people who don't have a few days or weeks to spare. In this case, the teams - with no prior knowledge of App Inventor or Androgen, had 3-4 hours to learn the basics and create a working pretotype. That's what rapid-prototyping tools like </span><a href="http://appinventor.googlelabs.com/about/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">AppInventor</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> and Androgen (which is still an internal tool) make possible.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 19px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 19px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We can't yet share some of the cool pretotypes that people came up with, but I was impressed with how people took our basic functionality and mashed it up with other Google cloud-based services like </span><a href="http://www.google.com/fusiontables/Home"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Fusion Tables</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">, YouTube and Picasa, to create some convincing and useful (or just fun) working pretotypes.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 19px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 19px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One of the things we'd love to do is an Android pretotyping hackathon open to non-Googlers. Stay tuned!</span></span><br />

Thanks to QCon 2010, we finally have a <a href="http://www.infoq.com/presentations/QCon-Keynote-Innovation-at-Google">great video recording of our pretotyping manifesto presentation</a>. Here's Patrick Copeland's keynote at QCon. He covers the Palm Pilot and the IBM speech-to-text example and does a smashing job with the "Innovator over Ideas" pitch!<br />

</span></span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_1IFw6Y1Zmec/TG6rq2a-grI/AAAAAAAACEY/PojezcTiG98/s1600/PalmPretotype.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_1IFw6Y1Zmec/TG6rq2a-grI/AAAAAAAACEY/PojezcTiG98/s320/PalmPretotype.jpg" /></span></a></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This story embodies the core motivations and principles of pretotyping:</span><br />
<ol><li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The first-hand experience of spending years and millions to produce </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"... an engineering marvel but a market failure."</span></i></li>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Realizing that their mistake was not in building 'it' wrong, but building the wrong 'it' and to </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"... not to make the same mistake twice."</span></i></li>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The creation of a pretotype – not to test if the Pilot could be built, but to test if he would actually use if they built it.</span></li>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Using one's imagination (i.e. pretending) to fill in the missing functionality.</span></li>
</ol><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">While mock-ups and non-functional prototypes are quite common in innovation, the act of pretending that the mock-ups are functional and using them as such (especially for an extended period of time) is much more rare. Pretending is key to pretotyping. As a matter of fact, before I hit upon the term pretotype, I came up with </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">pretendotype. </span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I eventually settled on pretotype because pretendotype was a mouthful. It's useful to remember, however, that the 'pre' in pretotype stands not only for earlier, prior to or before (as in "before you build it"), but also as reminder of the importance of <i>pre</i>tending. </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Pilot story is also a great way to illustrate one of the key differences between pretotyping and prototyping – and why we think it makes sense to introduce yet another word in the innovation vocabulary. The picture above is a classic pr<b>e</b>totype, the picture below (a Pilot prototype board, from the <a href="http://www.computerhistory.org/collections/accession/102619074">Computer History Museum</a> in Mountain View) is a classic pr<b>o</b>totype.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />

</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The primary purpose of pr<b>o</b>totypes is to answer questions such as:</span></div><div><ul><li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Can we build <b>it</b>?</span></li>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Will <b>it </b>work as intended?</span></li>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">How small/big/cheap/energy-efficient can we make <b>it</b>?</span></li>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">...</span></li>
</ul><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The primary purpose of pr<b>e</b>totypes is to answer questions such as:</span></div><div><ul><li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Would I use <b>it</b>?</span></li>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Would other people buy <b>it</b>?</span></li>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If they buy it, would they actually use <b>it</b> (more than once or twice)?</span></li>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">...</span></li>
</ul></div></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The two pictures also help to illustrate that it takes considerably more time, effort and money to build prototypes than to build pretotypes.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The line between pretotypes and prototypes is fuzzy; and some ideas lend themselves to pretotyping better than others. It would be difficult and not too useful, for example, to pretotype a laser before building one. But I believe that, in all cases, it's worthwhile to spend at least a few minutes thinking whether or not there is an opportunity for pretotyping and what could be learned by doing so.</span><br />
